Somali Pirates and Filipino Hostages
Of course, I am happy that the American merchant ship Captain was rescued by the US Navy. And I understand that the French rescued 4 of their citizens on the same day.
The real problem is the huge number of Filipino merchant seaman who have been captured and are being held hostage. I don't want to see any of them injured, but how can they earn a living for their familes back home when they are captive. I hope the nations of the world can figure a way to work this problem out. I have included an article. Treasure or Troops?
Those pesky Somali pirates are still at it. Hijacking ships all over the place. Two ships released last week with a cool $4 million for each one. Even though there is an international force patrolling the waters, the pirates are still able to elude them, for the most part. The pirates are getting stinking rich in this business because, the companies always payoff the ransoms.
I worry about this because Somalia is a lawless state and a failed state. So are the companies funding other sorts of terrorist activities when they pay? Is this something that is going to come back and bite us in the butt in a major way, in the future? An overwhelming number of the hostages are Pinoy merchantmen. Hardly anyone ever gets hurt and for the most part the hostages are well-treated. But my knee-jerk reaction is to have our military folks take these guys out. Isn't that what happened with the Barbary Pirates back in the 19th century, "Millions for defense but not a penny in tribute"? On the other hand, none of our soldiers, sailors, airmen or marines are dying there, now. Since there is no real government to work with in Somalia, any military intervention would be very costly indeed, in terms of American lives AND treasure. What to do....What to do? Daby
