Burping and Gas...
Learned something new from a book, I used to burp Evan just in between feedings (e.g. like after each breast, and/or halfway of the bottle) but the book also recommend that when the baby would stop nursing (or a long pause) give him a burp too. I almost always get results everytime I do this. It also seem to me that burping him while having him sit on my lap, while I cup his chin and giving him a little jiggle seem to work better nowadays than putting him over the shoulder. Though I still do the latter. 3 days ago for the first time Evan was really cranky because of gas. I called the doctor about this thinking/hoping she would tell me to get a gas relief medicine as a quick fix. However I was only adviced to burp Evan after each breast (if breasfeeding) and after each ounce (if bottlefeeding), and also to lay him on his back and move his legs in a cycling motion to move the air. Nurse told me that the doctor needed to see Evan first before she would recommend any medication for gas. Ger |

The lap burping works best for us. Recently, Little Abbey has taken to burping while she is still on the breast. She will pause for a second, let out a loud belch and then go back to nursing. Sometimes she has trouble staying latched on afterwards because mom and I are laughing too hard
I recommend buying some infant gas drops at your local grocery or drugstore. They seem to be everywhere here and they work well when the baby has gas and usually kick in after just a few seconds though I think the quickness is more attributed to the flavoring of the medicine which Little Abbey seems to like. Our doctor said that we could give it to her every feeding but we only give it to her when she has gas. We went for a couple weeks after the July 4th without giving her any though we have given her some this past week. |
