Philippines on red alert against possible coup
Manila: The Philippine military said Sunday a red alert has been declared in the national capital region, citing a supposed plan by a rightist group to overthrow the government in time for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday.
The highest alert is part of security precautions, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public information office chief Tristan Kison told Xinhua, adding that there are still potential threats posed by the mutinous Magdalo group. "There is an assumption that they are planning something. We recovered from them a blueprint of the Batasan complex and seized explosives from them," said Kison, referring to the Magdalo group that staged the short-lived Oakwood mutiny in 2003. However, Kison expressed optimism that the chances of the power-grab plot being carried out had been diminished following the discovery of the plan and the arrest of mutinous officers. It would be the discretion of the five other commanders of the military's unified area commands outside metro Manila whether to declare red alert in their respective area of responsibility, Kison said. The government's security officials earlier said at least 1,000 military personnel would be deployed outside and inside the Batasan complex of the House of Representatives, where President Arroyo will give her address. Meanwhile, at least 16,000 policemen would be deployed, mostly at the complex, due to alleged plots by militant rebels to lob a grenade at anti-government rallyists to ignite sentiments against the president, the officials said.
