I'm ready for Fear Factor food...:)
This trip I ate some balut, and loved it.. So I tried everything I could get my hands on at the street barbacues..
Balut - I took pics of the 16 and 18 day I ate and my friends up here told me "they eat that on Fear Factor! I'd ask for seconds! Deepfried Tempura (Yum - Slightly sweet fish/flour mix I love) Deepfried Bolabola (a round thing, got no idea what it is, ok, but not a favorite) Ngoniong (Good, like a tasty eggroll of some type) Chicken hotdog (not great, and I shudder as to what chicken parts they would use down there..lol) BBQ Chicken Heads (ick, no meat, even the brain cavity seemed to have bones. Was given the advise to chew well, but still no real meat. BBQ Chicken feet (ick, no meat at all) BBQ Chicken entrails (Good, nice and chewy, tastes great) BBQ boiled chicken blood (Yum! very good texture and taste) Whole dried BBQ squid (Yum! chewy and good taste) Whole steamed squid (Ick, very chewy, not much taste at all) Crab - the crabs down there run small, and they give you the whole thing. I get a little meat off the legs/claws. They keep telling me there is good meat in the body, but I have yet to find any. Reminds me of eating chicken heads. Shrimp - They call shrimp prawns down there (same thing right?) You get everything from prawn cakes (fried rice? cake with whole uncleaned shimp in them, kinda yucky), to totally clean (no head, tail, legs) prawns/shrimp that are awesome. Fish - I'm not a bone picker. Some of the whole BBQ fish was easy to peel off the bones (Lapu-Lapu maybe)?. Some like Bangus (Milkfish) was full of bones. Exceptions are Boneless Bangus fillets you can buy. They are great. Blue and Red Marlin fillets are great! Moi-Moi fillets I think were my favorite. I'd buy them at Gaisano or SM market, then have the small street grill in front of Ace Pension cook them for me for free (I tip well.. - Joe |

wow.. good you tried those... yeah, some of our 'fear factor' food aren't that good.. but glad you like most of them.. they're pretty tasteful.. but i think there r somethings forgot to eat.. or maybe i overlooked it... the 'one day old' chick... 'bituka ng manok or baboy' intestine of chicken and pork.... did you try those?.. if not, nxt time try them.. they're not that bad, in fact the chicken intestine is one my favorites amongst them.. miss it..

Why don't I see the message I posted? Did the database puke? I had a long list of foods and such there...
Ok, got the above fixed. I had ignored myself...lol I had BBQ chicken intestine. It was very nice, read my original post. Actually, anything I saw at a street BBQ in Cebu or Bohol I tried. What really scares me down there is the non-heated food. In a mall food court they have room temp eggs, chicken, fish, lots of stuff room temps. Much safer to eat a hot balut or chicken brain straight off the street grill than a 2 day old room temp pretty chicken salad from a mall food court. The fresh hot street bbq food is great! Just wait till evening when the vendors show up. I confused Litson and Lechon for a while. Finally got a clue. Lechon is pig, Litson means Rottiserie. A chopped whole Litson Manok is great! - Joe |
